Hello again my lovelies. I’m a bit sporadic on posting at the minute, I know. But can anyone else tell me, am I the only one who is struggling to read in this heat? I genuinely cannot concentrate for very long and it is driving me mad. I hope it cools down soon, just a little bit. I don’t do well in high heat! However, I do have a finished book to tell you about today. You might recognise this one from an Ask the Author post I did a few weeks ago. So I have finally got my hands on a copy (kindly gifted by the lovely C. Smith and B. Spackman) and now I’m here to share my thoughts with you! It is Starstruck, Book 1.
Starstruck, is a young adult fiction novel. It has hints of romance and fantasy, music and magic. It is the girls’ debut novel, and is to be the first in an on-going series. It was self-published in May of this year and is available in paperback and ebook from Amazon. Before I get going with my thoughts, here is the synopsis from the back of the book:
Everyone has their secrets.
Some are just bigger than others…
Jonathan Taylor is the name on everyone’s lips. Usually for the wrong reasons. With magical powers and a rock band he’s determined will make it big, he’s never far from the spotlight. He just never factored in falling for his sisters best friend.
Brooke is harbouring her own crush, all the while fighting back a bitter high school rivalry and an overprotective Italian family.
For Rosie, she know her biggest secret could prove deadly. But as boys and heartache cause her to sink deeper, it’s only a matter of time until she’s found out.
And Will knows all about secrets. His own powers have a darkness to them that few have glimpsed. If they knew, no one would look at him the same way again…
For most teenagers high school is about survival.
For these teenagers – every day is.
Starstruck follows the story of a group of best friends, tied together with a secret that runs through all of their families. The eldest boy of each family has powers. We follow them as they try and navigate high school and life as they try to plan for a future as well as keeping their secret. We see romance and heart break, success and falling down. But they get through everything together. Outside of school, the boys also have a band. Which for Jonathan is his one and only path for his future. He knows they can be big. But their gigs aren’t going as he’d planned. Some aren’t paying and most won’t let them play their original music. When the rest of the guys start to get down-trodden and decide they need to look at other paths for their future, Jonathan knows that it’s now or never. They need success. And he won’t use his powers to get it.
There’s so much I could say about the storylines in this book. But I don’t want to ruin it for you, if you intend on reading it. But I can honestly say, I really enjoyed reading it. The way the writing and storyline is put together has a feel of someone who has done it numerous times, which with this being the girls’ debut, I can only see the rest of their books being astonishing. The language choices and structure choices just add such a punch right where it’s needed. It complements the plot perfectly and makes you want to read on.
I also love that within the book, it is not just one storyline, with one main character and everyone else is there as a prop to that character’s storyline. Each one has their own plot line and we get to see that pan out through their perspectives. I also like that the different perspectives shown in the book transitions seamlessly into one and other. I find that when books are written in this manner, sometimes it can make the flow of the plot feel choppy as it unwinds, but I didn’t get this with Starstruck. It was a lovely pace, the flow was impeccable. It’s a great book.
I could go on and on, but I don’t think I need to. I would end this review by saying, I’d definitely recommend if you like, YA, romance and magic. It is so easy to read, it’s entertaining, it grabs your attention and it pulls on your heart strings. I don’t know what more you could want from a book, except more? But we even get that, as they are working on book number 2 as we speak. Amazing!
