Hello lovely readers! I’m slowly getting back into the flow of reading! Don’t you just love a reading slump? I was really sad when I found myself slipping into one over the past couple of weeks, because of how many review requests I had to read and just books that I’d bought that I was originally looking forward to reading. It was an awful feeling suddenly not wanting to read them. But I am back! I have a review for a book that was sent to me to read today. It is called Pigeon – Blood Red by Ed Duncan.
So, Pigeon – Blood Red is a mystery thriller that focuses on the underground, Chicago gangster circle. When a gambling addict named Robert steals an expensive ruby necklace from Gangster boss, Litvak he knows that he’s in big trouble. Litvak hires enforcer Rico to take care of the situation, retrieve the necklace and right the wrongs in their world. However, not everything is as it seems, as multiple lives become intertwined within this story, but who is guilty and who is merely in the wrong place at the wrong time?
If I am 100% honest, I wasn’t expecting to think much of this book when I picked it up. Nothing to do with the book or author itself, but more to do with the fact that “gangster” movies have never been my kind of thing and I’d never read a book on the subject either. But as I got into the book, I did find myself rather enjoying it. Everything in the book seemed to blend together seamlessly, giving a book that was easy to follow, understand and enjoy.
The characters in the book were definitely likeable. I feel like with characters that are crime bosses, or gangsters, it is very easy to fall into stereotypes or over-doing a character and making them over the top. But Duncan didn’t do that. His characters had that element of Chicago gangsters that you often see in movies, but were still their own people, with their own personalities rather than a carbon copy. The character development in this book throughout is great too! You are taken on a journey with them, it is great.
Another thing that surprised me about this book is how twisty it is. I wasn’t expecting as many twists and turns as there were. It really keeps you on your toes and makes for a really fun reading experience.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this book. It is a fun, interesting and entertaining read that stands out from the crowd. It contains amazingly put together characters with a great plot line that keeps you guessing the whole way through.
