His & Hers – Alice Feeney

Three words to describe my wife:

BEAUTIFUL. AMBITIOUS. UNFORGIVING.

I only need one word to describe my husband:

LIAR.

When a woman is murdered in Blackdown village, newsreader Anna Andrews is reluctant to cover the case. Anna’s ex-husband, DCI Jack Harper, is suspicious of her involvement, until he becomes a suspect in his own murder investigation.

Someone is lying, and some secrets are worth killing to keep.

His & Hers is a mystery/thriller that was published by HQ books in May 2020. It is a multiple perspective book. It’s written from the perspectives HIM, HER and also an unknown who is obviously the killer. The book jumps between the three perspectives, while throughout you have to try and guess who is responsible.

This was another one of those books that I had seen all over Instagram and blogs, so I purposely didn’t read any reviews feedback on the book. I didn’t want any hype to give me heightened expectations or otherwise. That being said, I didn’t really enjoy this book. I found it to be somewhat predictable and a little boring, as well as unrealistic. I knew within the first couple of chapters that the killer was neither him nor her, regardless of what the back cover wanted you to believe. I also felt like the bits that were meant to be creepy or awful just lacked that emotional punch.

When I say that the book was unrealistic, I’m talking about the killer reveal. I won’t say much, incase you do want to read it. But I just found it all to be a bit over the top, and just not likely. I think the author was going for a double “what the heck!?” moment and instead it was just a “eh?” moment. I have seen so many people loving this book though, so it could just be that I am more of a horror girl. I like thrillers that are super, super scary and creepy. I need a lot to creep me out. So it could just be that it’s not my kind of thriller. I just wanted more. I wanted more emotional punch, more gore, more creepiness, more suspense. The premise was a good one, I just wanted it to thrill me a little more than it did.

Overall, not a bad book. I would recommend it to those people that are normal (unlike me) and want a slightly creepy book that isn’t actually creepy. I think this is a book that that kind of reader would love. Whereas, me? I’m just a weirdo that likes to be terrified by books and movies.
