A TRAUMATISED WITNESS.
Karolinska Hospital, Stockholm. Detective Inspector Joona Linna is faced with a boy who witnessed the gruesome murder of his family. He’s suffered more than one hundred knife wounds and is comatose with shock.
A DISGRACED DETECTIVE.
Linna’s running out of time. The police do not want him on the case. The killer’s on the run and there are seemingly no clues. Desperate for information, Linna enlists specialist Dr Erik Maria Bark, a hypnotist who vowed never to practise again.
A DEVASTATING CASE.
As the hypnosis begins, a long and terrifying chain of events unfurls with reverberations far beyond Linna’s case.
The Hypnotist is the first book by Lars Kepler in the Joona Linna detective series. It was originally published back in 2011. The copy that I have is from HarperCollins Publishers and was published in 2018. I came across these books when I read the Stalker which is one of the later books and it absolutely terrified me. But at the time I thought it was a stand alone book. I couldn’t find it one Goodreads or anything. It wasn’t until recently that I found the rest of the books were on amazon and were a thing when I decided to give them a go.
I found this book to be a very gripping and complex thriller. Lars Kepler’s books tend to have multiple plots interweaving together in the story, keeping you guessing. It is the kind of book where you have to figure out who is involved in which crime and how. This book was no exception of that. I love how much this book drew me in. It was graphic in places, full of suspense and mystery. It is everything I love in a thriller/horror.
The characters were just as well put together as they were in the previous book I had read by Kepler. The heroes are likeable and relatable while the villains are down right terrifying. Their depth and realistic nature just add to the creepiness of the book. It makes the book feel authentic and real. Like it is something that has happened in real life. It drags you head first into the story and doesn’t let you go until you finish the last page. And even after that it leaves you creeped out.
I would 100% recommend this book as well as Stalker. I cannot wait to read the rest of the Joona Linna series. I just know I am going to love them all. If you want a truly creepy, gripping thriller then this is for you!
