Helloooo. It is time for yet another book review! And this week we’ve got a twisty little thriller called Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty. Like most of the books that I’m reviewing this month, I picked this up for my November Haul at Waterstones for £8.99. I’d seen it on the app and it sounded pretty cool and exciting so I inevitably bought it. It’s a bit of a thriller but not in your usual sense. It’s not a murder mystery or a missing persons it’s based in a luxury health retreat that encourages mindfulness and healing. I know, strange. But stay with me.
The cover is so vibrant. The picturesque sunny day, the fancy pool all draw your eye. Tie that with the bold writing and it’s an impactful cover. I also love the little details in the cover like the word Perfect is wavy as if it is part of the reflections on the water, it’s a nice touch. I also feel like since the pool is featured however briefly in the book it also gives you a feel for what the author thought the luxury hotel looked like in their head, it makes it easier to picture the characters surroundings as you read.
The synopsis of this book is so short. It’s not a big paragraph, it’s not an in-depth speech of why you should read this book and why you should love it. It is just four simple, short sentences.
One luxury retreat in the middle of nowhere.
Ten days in which no one can leave.
Nine strangers seeking perfection.
And each discovering the perfect lie…
I mean, how vague and yet so straight to the point can you get? But I think it works pretty well. It’s mysterious and it made me instantly want to know what this Perfect lie is.
I honestly think that this book may be one of the most twisty books I’ve ever read. There are some things in this book that happen ( I’m not going to say what as I don’t want to include spoilers) that I would never have guessed would happen. Like genuinely, I was dumbfounded. And a little confused. I was gripped from the start and I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next, because every time I thought I’d guessed the ending, I was so wrong.
I did, as well fall in love with the characters. I was worried that with having 9 guests, the hotel owner and her staff that some of the characters that weren’t as heavily featured wouldn’t be as relatable or realistic as other people. I was so happy as I learned that they were all so amazingly written and created. They all shone with their own experiences and emotions and personalities. I liked them all in their own ways. They all had such complex histories and I got to learn so much about their pasts and what has gotten them to this point, about who they are. It’s not just a case of “I’m here” and then a lot of stuff happens and we don’t know why or when or how. Everything is provided. And I love that. I love that I felt like I knew them, that these could be real people and I do think that, that is hard to find in books. To find characters so well developed that they seem they could be real people.
It does jump from different perspectives of the guests and staff and that can be a little bit throwing, but as with all books that change perspective you’ve just got to give it a little focus and just take note of the characters. I found this book such a delight to read. It was entertaining, shocking, it made me laugh as well as making me feel shock or sadness. I think that’s when you know you’ve found a really great book. When it can make you feel something, when it fully sucks you into the story and you travel through it with the characters and don’t just feel like you’re reading a detached narrative.
I think I’d highly recommend this book to so many people. I genuinely did love it. So much so that it’s star rating would be a 5/5 for me! A massive well done to Liane Moriarty and I can’t wait to read more!
Star rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
